This weekend we spent a couple of days at the Nebraska State Fair. We had not been there since it moved out of Lincoln to Grand Island. Elise was competing in the Galaxy of Stars Talent Competition. Elise and I arrived about 10:30 on Saturday morning and made our way to the rehearsal and staging area. After a few hours of meetings and a workshop with last years winner, we headed out the doors to enjoy a couple of hours at the fair before the semi-finals. Elise wanted cotton candy on a stick, but after we discovered that we could only buy it in a bag, she switched gears to SLUSHEES. We bought a cup and could refill it for pretty cheap. She had 4 or 5 of these over the two days we were there. Plus, gave in and had cotton candy out of a bag. Sugar high!
Scott drove up later in the day and met us. We walked through the Nebraska building together. This sand castle was fun to see!
Then Elise and I headed to the dressing rooms to get ready and Scott went to save seats. For the semi-finals, Elise sang "Good Morning, Baltimore!" from the musical Hairspray. It is one of her favorite musicals and this song was so fun to watch her sing and perform.
Greg and Rose made the trip to watch her as did her voice teacher. Her category was "The Shooting Stars," 13-18 year olds. There were 30 acts overall and 17 acts in her category. She made it into the top 15 and would move on to perform in the finals. Some of the top prizes waiting at the end were a $4,000 Nashville recording package, a $1,000 Megastar package, and $250, $150 & $100 for top three in each category... plus People's Choice and Contestants Choice awards.
On Sunday morning, Elise and I set out to find breakfast and worshiped at the GIFree church where the speaker from the previous days workshop was the worship pastor. Then we took in all the animals at the fair and found the dairy barn where we waited quite a while to get some ice cream.
Our favorite building was the birthing pavilion. Few day old baby pigs, goats, cows, sheep and a mama cow ready to give birth at any moment were so precious.
Then it was time to head to the dressing area to get ready for the finals. Scott drove back and was the offical seat saver again. For the finals, Elise sang "Thank You for the Music" from Abba. She second guessed this choice all morning long. But ultimately talked herself into just giving it her best.
And she won 2nd place in her category! She was very happy with that and a little relieved to be done, but mostly glad to get out of those shoes! One of the judges was a friend from our old church who I hadn't seen in about 10 years. After the judging was finished, I went and found her to say hi. Then she wanted a pic with Elise :)
And here she is! Beaming with her trophy and her check ;)
So proud of you, Elise! Way to go!
