Italy Part 6 - Getting Home

Wednesday, December 19
On Wednesday morning, we left the apartment with Adrienne's roommate, Lauren, who happened to be on our same flight to New York. When we got to New York, we needed to get my boarding pass for the flight to Chicago, but when we tried to access it through the automated machine, it just kept saying "flight cancelled". So we found an agent, who then called her manager and they figured out that the Omaha airport was closed due to weather, so we could not get our boarding passes to our final destination in Omaha that night. For some reason, the manager loved us and was so helpful. Many people complain about the travel industry, but there is not much anyone can do when a blizzard rolls through town. My main concern was not having to sleep in the Chicago airport. After debating if should we try to reroute through Kansas City and drive home, or wait it out a couple of days and stay in Chicago, we decided to go through Chicago. The manager was able to get us to Chicago, and then booked us a flight with a different airline who had Thursday morning flights in the hopes that the Omaha airport would be open by then.

We made it to Chicago just fine. By this time, we had been awake for 22 hours. Scott had booked us a hotel that had a shuttle to and from the airport. But before we headed there, we had to figure out where our luggage would end up. Then, I wanted to see if I could get a boarding pass so I wouldn't have to worry about that at 5 in the morning. Adrienne and I made a great team touring through that Chicago airport. We were able to find the other airline, get a boarding pass and then found the shuttle to our hotel with no problems. We got to the hotel, set our alarm to get up in 4 hours, and zonked out. Unfortunately, Adrienne was still on Italy time, so at 3:30am, she was ready to start the day. We didn't have to leave the hotel until about 5am, so I was able to get showered and grab an apple and cereal bar from the snack bar and check the radar about 800 times.

We got back to the airport with no problem, then breezed through the security check, (we are now pros at that!) There was even a Starbucks right outside the security check point-thank the Lord! When we got to our gate, there were 16 people waiting to fly on standby. I was so glad I had our boarding passes! With coffee and muffins in hand, we sat down and waited to board the flight. But then, the pilot didn't show up- he got delayed on his previous flight. But he finally arrived and we were able to leave Chicago and get to Omaha. Scott and the kids braved the horrible road conditions (really, we have talked about how he shouldn't have done that- he does what he wants...) and came to pick us up. I had wished I had the camera out when Eliot saw Adrienne. He was so cute, running to her ;) And she was crying and couldn't believe how tall he was... it was just great. Elise was excited too. Here they are in their presents (Yes, Eliot got a Bulls shirt from the Chicago airport... he's a hard one to shop for)...
What a great time we had! Where are we going next, Adrienne?
